For 1980, the Thunderbird arrived on Ford's all-purpose Fox platform weighing hundreds of pounds less and measuring 15 inches shorter than the 1979 edition. It was a 2.3-liter paired with a 3-speed automatic transmission and the same engine was mounted on the Ford Fairmont and Granada. Ford's Thunderbird turned 25 in 1980 and, despite a significant redesign meant to keep the iconic nameplate more in step with the times, the car inspired only indifference in buyers. Late in the 1980, a new engine with 6 cylinders was offered, developing 88 hp. Both engines were paired with a 4-speed automatic gearbox. The classic had a 4.2-liter V8 engine that boasted 115 hp and a more powerful one developing 131 hp, a 5.0-liter V8 unit offered as optional. The braking system featured front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The car had MacPherson strut front suspension and a four-link live rear axle, while both front and rear axles had stabilizer bars. It shared its chassis with the contemporary Mercury Cougar XR7 and Lincoln Continental. The Thunderbird had a unibody construction and was built on the Fox platform. Compared to the very popular previous Torino-based Thunderbird, this new T-Bird lost nearly six inches of wheelbase and nearly a foot-and-a-half of overall length. It is covered in the White Paint that is. For 1980, Ford downsized the eighth-generation Thunderbird onto the Ford Fox platform in the interest of improved fuel efficiency and emissions compliance. The body on it is in excellent condition with excellent fit of all the panels. Fords excellent new four-speed automatic with overdrive was standard. Two engines were available, a 4.2-liter V-8 with 119 horsepower and a 4.9-liter V-8 with 134 hp. Inside the new Cougar XR-7 was digital instrumentation that would become the rage in the 1980s. This car is in excellent condition and showing only 57K miles which we believe to be original. The Thunderbird pulled off downsizing with less grace than the Cougar. I was not a fan of the body style when they were new but really like it now just because you don’t hardly ever see one. This was one of the last birds we bought before my father passed away and I’ve just never really done anything with it except for driving it home from Michigan when we bought it and a few short trips after. It is the plush velour seats which basically feel like a real comfy couch. This car has a factory moonroof, cb, premium sound TRX rims (2 sets, one set Michelin black walls, and one original whitewalls) I think the only option it doesn’t have would be leather. This is a 73000 mile original condition built with all the quality one could expect from a 1980 Ford. Ford Thunderbird bolt patterns are: 5x114. So figured let’s try here, I purchased another bird recently and with that I’ve no run out of storage space. I’ve tried eBay, Craigslist etc all to no avail.
